This structure, located in a pleasant position a few meters from the bank of the Tornio river, is obtained from a wooden villa of the early twentieth century, which served as a farm and has kept its original appearance. The structure includes 18 beds in double or triple rooms, spartan, with shared WC and shower. It is ideal for those who are budget conscious but do not want to give up the comfort of a rustic structure. The breakfast room is located in the same building
Kukkola River Cottages is located in Kukkolankoski, a hamlet located on the banks of the Tornio River, which marks the border between Sweden and Finland. Two languages are spoken here, two currencies are used and you live in two different time zones! The structure is managed with sympathy by Mr. Risto Kantola, and is equipped with about 50 beds. You will stay in an independent mini-apartment sleeping 2 or 6 located in a wonderful position, a few meters from the Finnish bank of the Tornio river. Access to the traditional sauna, located in a building adjacent to the cottage, is free (you will have to heat the wood-burning sauna yourself – we will teach you how to do it upon arrival).
The best time to do this type of itinerary is from mid-June to mid-August

Observation of the midnight sun (or white night)
The midnight sun is an atmospheric phenomenon that can be observed at latitudes equal to or above the Arctic Circle, at the turn of the summer solstice (roughly from 12 to 30 June). In this period, the inclination of the earth's axis means that the sun, even in the middle of the night, never goes below the horizon. The safari will only take place in the evenings with a clear or partly cloudy climate, as clouds obstruct observation of the phenomenon. We will start the safari after dinner, reaching a picturesque place, with good visibility to the north. The safari includes photography basics. It is advisable to bring a camera with a reflex body, with a wide-angle lens (focal length maximum 24 mm).
Period: approximately from 12 to 30 June (for the midnight sun), and from 15 April to 15 August (for the white night)
Duration: 3-6 hours depending on the destination
Visit to the fishing village of Kukkolaforsen
During this excursion, you will visit with the help of our guide the ancient fishing village of Kukkolaforsen, which with its typical wooden houses is still inhabited by fishing families. The transfer will take 15 to 40 minutes by private vehicle, or (from the Finnish shore) 5 minutes by boat. Guided tour of the interesting fishing museum, which will show you how people lived in these areas in ancient times. The historic buildings that are preserved within this village include two mills, a smokehouse, and a "Kota", the classic wooden hut that is still used today to gather around the fire, eat and converse. The visit lasts about 2h, and ends with a lunch at the village's award-winning restaurant, overlooking the Kukkola rapids, the longest in the Nordic countries.
